The 2026/27 NBS Bank National Division League enters its final day of the first round today with the promotion race finely poised, as several teams are separated only by goal difference and the battle at the bottom remains equally intense.
The biggest attraction will be in Karonga, where league leaders Songwe Border United host bottom-placed Changalume Barracks at Karonga Stadium, while second-placed Extreme FC travel to face FOMO FC in another potentially decisive encounter.
Songwe Border and Extreme are level on 22 points from 10 matches, with both sides recording seven wins, one draw and two defeats.
Remarkably, they also have an identical goal difference of plus seven, leaving the two sides virtually inseparable at the summit.
Songwe, however, will be looking to bounce back after suffering their second defeat of the campaign against Namitete Zitha, while Extreme come into the final fixture of the first round with confidence after beating struggling Mighty Tigers 2-0 at Mpira Stadium on Saturday.
The Mchinji-based Extreme side’s victory handed Mighty Tigers their sixth defeat of the season and kept their promotion ambitions firmly alive.
For Changalume, the challenge could hardly be greater. The soldiers have managed just four points and are rooted at the bottom of the 12-team table.
The Zomba-based military side has scored 10 goals only while conceding 22, highlighting the defensive problems facing new coach, Mike Kumanga.
Kumanga has already acknowledged the need for time to rebuild the side after a difficult start to his tenure, but a daunting assignment against the league leaders represents another major test of his rebuilding project.
The battle immediately below the leading pair is also tight, with Mzuzu City Hammers and Embangweni United tied on 17 points.
Both sides have won five, drawn two and lost three of their 10 matches. Hammers occupy third place on superior goal difference and host sixth-placed Ntaja United, while fourth-placed Embangweni welcome fifth-placed Namitete Zitha.
Namitete and Ntaja are themselves locked on 15 points, having each won four, drawn three and lost three matches, although Namitete have the better goal difference.
The congested standings mean that today’s results could significantly reshape the table before the league heads into the second round.
At Zomba Stadium, seventh-placed Ndirande All Stars, on 14 points, host 11th-placed Mighty Tigers, who have just six points.
Ndirande will be seeking maximum points to strengthen their position in the upper half of the table, while Mighty Tigers face the urgent task of arresting a worrying run that has left them only above Changalume.
The final round of matches follows an eventful week in which FOMO FC and Embangweni United drew 0-0, with FOMO once again punished by poor finishing despite dominating long periods of the contest.
FOMO coach Bishop Ntchindi Mhango admitted afterwards that his side had dropped two points after creating numerous opportunities.
Meanwhile, Chilobwe United fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Ndirande Stars, further demonstrating the competitiveness of a league in which momentum can change rapidly from one matchday to another.
With the first round concluding today, the NBS Bank National Division League has produced a table where there is little room for complacency.
At the summit, Songwe Border and Extreme are locked together. Behind them, Hammers and Embangweni are separated only by goal difference, while Namitete and Ntaja remain within touching distance.
At the other end, Changalume face an uphill battle to revive their campaign.
The first-round finale therefore promises more than just a conclusion to the opening half of the season—it could provide the first major clues about which clubs possess the consistency and resilience required to sustain a promotion challenge, and which must dramatically improve before the second round begins.
