UNIMA launches Nzeru Hub to enhance digital learning

The University of Malawi (UNIMA) has emphasised the need to embrace digital learning platforms as one way of addressing challenges arising from the shortage of teaching and learning materials in higher education institutions.

Speaking during the launch of Nzeru Hub under the Inclusive Digital Transformation for Malawi (IDT4M) project on Monday, UNIMA’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samson Sajidu, said the initiative marks a significant milestone in advancing digital education in Malawi.

Professor Sajidu said the hub will provide both students and staff with free access to a wide range of learning materials through digital platforms, thereby expanding their knowledge base and academic experience.

“This platform will not only complement classroom learning but also ensure that students and lecturers have access to quality academic resources regardless of their location. It is a milestone in modernising education and promoting inclusivity through digital platforms,” Sajidu explained.

The Nzeru Hub is part of a broader collaboration between UNIMA and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) aimed at promoting inclusive digital transformation and improving access to educational resources.

UNDP Malawi’s Digital Innovation Analyst under IDT4M, Phyllis Chibisa, said the platform will play a crucial role in equipping students with specialised knowledge and digital competencies necessary for the job market.

“Through Nzeru Hub, students will access specialised courses and professional training materials that are in line with what the industry demands. The platform will empower young people with the digital skills necessary to thrive in the evolving economy,” said Chibisa.

Reacting to the development, Prince Kuthula Zinga, a Bachelor of Science in Computer Network Engineering student at UNIMA, expressed optimism that the initiative will bridge the digital divide between students and communities.

“My expectation is that this will help to bridge the digital divide that we have in Malawi as we know that we have a lot of people in rural areas who are not yet conversant with these digital skills. Let us all participate and make sure that we actively engage with this program because technology has come to stay” said Zinga.

Msimuko: It is an opportunity for students

Another student studying Bachelor of Education in Computer Science, Omega Msimuko, encouraged fellow students to take full advantage of the platform, saying it provides an opportunity for learners and the community at large to innovate beyond traditional classroom boundaries.

“It is an opportunity for students and surrounding communities to embrace digital literacy. As the world is changing in terms of technology, we need digital skills to transform the nation and I would like to advise people to be part of this development,” she said.

The Nzeru Hub launch reflects UNIMA’s commitment to advancing digital transformation in education and ensuring equitable access to learning opportunities for all.
