For close to a week now, most filling stations in Zomba City do not have diesel, a situation that has made waste collection activities by Zomba City Council come to a halt.

Zomba City Council’s Spokesperson, Aubrey Moses, says the council is exploring other means of getting the precious fluid to resume waste collection.

“We are in talks with various stakeholders and filling station owners to assist us once supplies are in so that we resume collecting the waste,” says Moses.

Moses has, however, acknowledged the dangers that might erupt if waste is not collected and has advised residents to practice proper waste disposal.

Petet Latimos who plies his trade behind Zomba Flea Market expressed concern with the council’s failure to collect waste saying it chasing his customers away.

“Some of my customers are failing to approach my bench which is closer to the bin which is very full. The council should do something about this situation,” says Litimosi.

In 2020, it was revealed that 52.5 tons of waste is generated in Zomba City per day.
