The School of Law, Economics and Government at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) says awarding best performing students is a sure way of producing people who are going to complement the human capital development goal of Malawi 2063.

Executive Dean for the school, Professor Happy Kayuni, said this as the school awarded 12 outstanding students for their academic work in thesis writing, course work and publications.

According to Kayuni, the awards also help the students to work extra hard and also help UNIMA to be ranked as one of the best academic institutions for producing students that excel in various fields.

“If the students have been recognised by us for being outstanding, they stand a better chance of getting a scholarship. The awards also help the ranking of our university through publications and research output which the students are involved in,” explained Kayuni.

In his remarks, one of the awardees, Thomson Kumwenda, advised fellow students to work hard as the country expects educated people who would make important contributions towards development.

“UNIMA pushes you to the limit but at the same time there is a lot of support that you get from the lecturers, staff and peers who all play a role in moulding graduates that are meaningful to the society,” stated Kumwenda, a PhD in Economics student.

Bertha Nguluwe, a Masters student who was recognised for her course work, said her hard work and collaboration with other students helped her to produce excellent class work which has led to the award.

Apart from certificates of recognition, the awardees also walked away with K100,000 each.
