The Rainwater Harvesting Association of Malawi (RHAM) has urged communities and stakeholders to invest in rainwater harvesting systems ahead of the next rainy season when the country is expected to experience El Niño conditions that could affect rainfall patterns.
RHAM Chairperson, MacPherson Nthara, has made the call as Malawi joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Rain Day today, 29 July 2026.
Nthara said harvesting and storing rainwater is a practical way of improving water security for households, schools, health facilities and other institutions.
“This year’s commemoration will emphasise the need for people to start valuing rainwater and make plans for rainwater collection and storage once the rainy season starts,” said Nthara.
Nthara said World Rain Day provides an opportunity to promote sustainable water management and encourage more people to embrace rainwater harvesting as one of the solutions to the country’s growing water challenges.
“Rainwater is a valuable resource that is often lost through runoff. By harvesting and storing it, communities can improve access to water for domestic use, agriculture and other productive activities while building resilience to the impacts of climate change,” he added.
Meanwhile, RHAM has launched a nationwide campaign dubbed “Harvest Rainwater Now,” aiming to reach one million Malawians through awareness messages and practical demonstrations throughout the coming rainy season.
The campaign will involve government institutions, non-governmental organisations, faith-based groups and the media in promoting rainwater harvesting across the country.
