University of Malawi students pursuing an early childhood development course have donated playing materials to Tifatse Community Based Care Centre in the area of Traditional Authority M’biza in Jali Zomba.
The donation was part of their hands-on experience on early childhood development and also a way of understanding the tenets of playing for children in the early childhood development centers (ECDs).
John Sileti, an Early Childhood Development lecturer at UNIMA, stressed that playing is one of the major components of early childhood development and therefore advised caregivers at the CBCC to ensure that they give the children enough time to play.
“Playing is one of the integral elements of a child’s development as they grow, hence the need to prioritise it because it stimulates the children,” he said while also encouraging parents to continue sending their kids to the centre.
The Zomba District Council’s social welfare official responsible for early childhood development, Welosi Chikwiri, who was the guest of honour at the event, applauded the University of Malawi students and Sparkle Foundation for collaborating to make the donation.
Chikwiri emphasised that the council is committed to improving early childhood development in the district.
One of the students from UNIMA, Malamulo Kwisole, described the visit to the CBCC as a reflection of what they learn in class.
