Zomba Gymkhana Golf Club, in partnership with the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), will host a major fundraising golf tournament aimed at restoring the historic but deteriorating Gymkhana Golf Course in Zomba.
The event, scheduled for 2 May 2026, has been branded “Fairways of Honour – The General Jaffu Fundraising Tournament” in recognition of Malawi Defence Force Commander General George Jaffu, who is expected to attend as guest of honour.
Organisers say the initiative seeks to mobilise resources for the rehabilitation of the golf course, which has reportedly suffered years of neglect and poor maintenance.
Zomba Gymkhana Golf Club Captain Paul Kastigu said the state of the course has become a source of concern for golfers and stakeholders, prompting the club to seek support from MDF.
“The Gymkhana Golf Course has been in a dire state for quite some time. We engaged the Malawi Defence Force, which has since been assisting with maintenance works, including mowing the course using tractors and lawn mowers, as part of efforts to restore it to a playable condition,” said Kastigu.
The organisers are targeting to raise K50 million for the rehabilitation project. So far, K27 million has already been secured through sponsorships from NBS Bank, National Bank of Malawi and Mangochi Cement.
The tournament is also expected to attract several prominent golfers and dignitaries, including Minister of Agriculture Roza Mbilizi, former Zomba Golf Club captains Professor Francis Moto and Professor Dzimani Kadzamira, as well as the club’s current chairperson, Engineer Mayamiko Kabango.
According to the organisers, at least 40 golfers have already registered for the competition, while additional participants are being encouraged to sign up through registration links circulating on various social media platforms.
Kastigu expressed optimism that the fundraising initiative would mark the beginning of a new chapter for golf in Zomba.
“We believe this tournament will help reawaken Zomba Golf Club and restore the course to the standards expected by golfers and the wider sporting community,” he said.
