Zomba-based military side Red Lions Football Club says the overwhelming support it is receiving from its fans has played a key role in the team’s encouraging start to life in the FDH Bank Premiership.
The club’s Head Coach, Malumbo Mkandawire, says playing in front of passionate home fans at Zomba Stadium has given the newly promoted side a significant boost as they continue to compete against more established teams in the top flight league.
Red Lions have collected nine points from their opening matches, recording victories over Goshen City Dedza Dynamos and LUANAR Mitundu FC, while drawing against FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, CRECK Sporting Club and Ekhaya FC.
Their only defeat came when they played Karonga United at Karonga Stadium.
Mkandawire attributed that loss to poor officiating, claiming that questionable refereeing decisions influenced the outcome of the match.
The club currently sits seventh on the league table, a position Mkandawire says reflects the positive changes implemented within the team’s structures.
“Credit should also go to the inclusion of civilians in the club’s executive and supporters’ committees, as well as within players, which has extended a sense of ownership of the club to civilians as playing at Zomba Stadium really feels like playing at home unlike previously,” said Mkandawire.
The team’s next fixture is against Chitipa United at Zomba Stadium in the FDH Bank Premiership league after the international break.
