The Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) has announced that it has introduced online and mobile money platforms to enhance its humanitarian fundraising efforts.

MRCS’s Director of Programs and Development, Leonard Maganga, made the announcement at a press briefing held in anticipation of the official launch of the 2026 Red Cross Day and Flag Week scheduled for May 8 at Kamuzu Palace and to be presided over by President Arthur Peter Mutharika.

“The move to digital donations reflects changing financial habits among Malawians and is expected to broaden participation in humanitarian support. Recognising that many Malawians are moving away from cash transactions, we intend to prioritise this year’s campaign with digital contributions,” said Maganga.

MRCS Brand and Volunteer Coordinator, Eliot Nazonse, emphasised that the organisation estimates MK90,000 can sustain a household of five for one month. With MK200 million, the organisation plans to support at least 2,000 households in the early stages of emergencies.

“Beyond monetary contributions, we encourage donations of non-food items such as blankets, tents, construction materials, clothing, and kitchenware to meet diverse community needs,” he added.

Through this year’s Flag Week campaign, which aims at raising at least K200 million, the Malawi Red Cross Society is calling for generous contributions to bolster disaster preparedness, enhance health services, and expand community resilience initiatives.

This year’s commemoration is guided by the theme “United in Humanity”, a call for Malawians to embrace compassion, unity, and resilience in building stronger communities.
