The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced the resignation of Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi, who will officially leave the post on August 21, 2026.
According to a statement released by MEC on Tuesday, Mpesi submitted his resignation letter on 24 May 2026 and will continue serving during the three month notice period to allow for a smooth handover process.
“The Commission appreciates his contribution towards strengthening the country’s electoral management framework during his tenure,” reads part of the statement.
MEC said Mpesi played a key role in a number of electoral processes, including constituency boundary reviews, electoral legal reforms and implementation of the 2025 General Election Operational Plan.
The Commission has since thanked Mpesi for his service and wished him success in his future endeavours.
Mpesi served as Chief Elections Officer at a time the Commission was implementing various reforms aimed at improving the management of elections in the country.
MEC has not yet announced who will replace him.
