The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has called on journalists to play a leading role in disseminating accurate information about taxation, saying informed reporting is essential in improving tax compliance among Malawians.
Speaking during a media training in Mangochi today, MRA Head of Corporate Affairs, Wilma Chalulu, said the media has a critical responsibility in ensuring that citizens, including traders and landlords are receiving correct information on tax matters.
Chalulu said it is important for journalists to have a clear understanding of tax issues because misinformation about taxation results in misunderstandings and discourages voluntary compliance.
“When journalists have a good understanding of tax issues, they are better equipped to report accurately and fairly, helping citizens appreciate the importance of paying taxes and encouraging voluntary compliance,” she said.
She added that accurate and balanced reporting on tax policies and reforms would help raise public awareness of the importance of paying taxes and contribute to increased compliance.

One of the participants, Nation Publications reporter Ayamba Kandodo, welcomed the training, saying it has enhanced his understanding of tax issues.
Kandodo said the knowledge gained will enable him to report accurately and confidently on taxation, helping the public better understand key tax policies and their obligation.
