New Changalume Barracks head coach, Mike Kumanga, faces another stern examination of his credentials when the soldiers host promotion-chasing Mzuzu City Hammers at Zomba Stadium on Saturday.
Kumanga’s appointment has come at a critical point in Changalume’s campaign, with the soldiers rooted at the bottom of the table with four points from four draws and still searching for their first victory of the season.
His first assignment did not produce the desired start as Changalume suffered a narrow defeat away to Ntaja FC last week, conceding from a penalty in the dying minutes of the encounter.
The result means the new coach has yet to taste victory since taking over from Assistant Coach Austin Mndoolo, who had been serving as interim head coach.
The late penalty defeat will make Saturday’s home fixture even more significant for Kumanga and his charges.
Having inherited a side struggling to turn competitive performances into victories, Kumanga now has an opportunity to begin changing the team’s fortunes in front of their home supporters.
But the task could hardly be more demanding, with fourth-placed Mzuzu City Hammers arriving with ambitions of strengthening their challenge for a place among the league’s leading sides.
The Hammers have accumulated 14 points and will be targeting maximum points in Zomba to remain firmly in contention for a top-three finish.
