The Malawi National Women’s Football Team, the Scorchers, have reached the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final for the first time in history after overcoming Algeria 3-1 in a dramatic semifinal that showcased the debutants’ pace, physicality and devastating use of through balls.
The historic victory at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat underlined Malawi’s transformation from tournament debutants into genuine continental contenders, with the Chawinga sisters once again proving decisive in attack.
From the opening exchanges, Algeria struggled to cope with Malawi’s aggressive front three.
Temwa and Tabitha Chawinga were repeatedly released behind the Algerian defence, with the North Africans fortunate not to fall behind inside the opening ten minutes.
Malawi’s approach was clear: win the ball, release runners early and exploit the space behind Algeria’s defensive line.
That strategy almost paid immediate dividends when Temwa and Tabitha were sent through in the seventh and eighth minutes, although both opportunities went begging.
Algeria, meanwhile, attempted to test Malawi’s goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo from a distance, relying heavily on long balls and long-range efforts but Sikelo remained composed, repeatedly dealing with Algeria’s attempts to catch her off guard.
The breakthrough eventually came in spectacular fashion in the 34th minute when Ireen Khumalo delivered a dangerous corner which was initially attacked by Faith Chimzimu.
The ball fell invitingly for Tabitha Chawinga, who produced an acrobatic overhead kick that struck the underside of the crossbar before nestling into the net.
It was a moment of individual brilliance, but also a reward for Malawi’s sustained pressure.
The Scorchers then doubled their advantage when Chimzimu again proved instrumental.
Receiving the ball near the edge of the box, she released it to Temwa Chawinga, who turned, rounded the goalkeeper and calmly slotted the ball home.
Algeria’s task became even more difficult after their last defender was sent off for denying Tabitha a clear goalscoring opportunity.
However, the first half ended with further drama for Malawi when Rose Kabzere was also dismissed, leaving both teams reduced to ten players.
Algeria emerged from the interval with renewed urgency and pushed forward in search of a way back into the contest.
Temwa had an opportunity to extend Malawi’s advantage in the 51st minute after being released into a one-on-one situation, but she shot wide.
Algeria finally pulled one back when a floated free-kick caused confusion in the Malawi defence.
Chimwemwe Madise and Rose Alufandika failed to deal with the delivery, allowing an Algerian player to pounce and smash the ball home to make it 2-1.
For a brief period, the Scorchers appeared to lose some of the steel provided by Kabzere in the midfield.
Coach Lovemore Fazili responded decisively, withdrawing Asimenye Simwaka and Chikondi Gondwe and introducing Leticia Chinyamula and Vanessa Chikupira to restore greater defensive solidity and physical presence in the midfield.
The adjustment paid dividends.
In the 76th minute, Bernadetta Mkandawire released Tabitha Chawinga with a perfectly weighted through ball. The forward raced into the penalty area, shrugged off the attention of the Algerian defenders and calmly finished to restore Malawi’s two-goal cushion.
It was another example of the Scorchers’ most potent weapon on the night: quick, incisive passes behind the defence and the pace of the Chawinga sisters to exploit them.
Algeria continued to search for a route back into the match, repeatedly trying their luck from distance, but Sikelo stood firm between the posts.
Her reflexes and composure ensured Algeria’s long-range shooting did not translate into further goals.
Malawi could have added a fourth when Chikupira was played through by Temwa in the 79th minute, but her effort went straight to the goalkeeper.
As the minutes ticked away, the Scorchers managed the game intelligently, making further substitutions to preserve their energy and defensive shape.
The final whistle confirmed a landmark achievement.
For a side appearing at the WAFCON for the first time, Malawi have now gone all the way to the final, defeating Algeria through a combination of tactical discipline, athleticism, relentless running and the devastating finishing of the Chawinga sisters.
The Scorchers’ journey has already rewritten Malawian women’s football history.
Now, one match stands between Fazili’s charges and an unprecedented continental crown.
Malawi are no longer simply debutants making up the numbers.
They are WAFCON finalists.
