A political commentator, Wonderful Mkhutche, has advised newly elected members of parliament (MPs) to remember the people who voted for them to go to the august house.
Mkhutche said some MPs forget about their constituents, leaving them behind without fulfilling the promises they made before they were elected.
“Oftentimes, MPs forget what needs to be done once elected. I would advise them to maintain contact with people in their constituencies so that they should understand the issues that need to be dealt with in order for them to be effective representatives,” explains Mkhutche.
He said the new cohort should keep in mind that things have changed over the years and people are now holding leaders accountable and are not as forgiving, therefore they should not be surprised if they will not be voted back into power in the next election should they not deliver as expected by their constituents.
“These new MPs should reflect on what happened to former parliamentarians. Most of them did not retain their seats. This should tell them that people are not that patient when you are not delivering according to their wishes,” adds Mkhutche.
On 30th September, 2025 the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) made the final declaration of results for parliamentary elections following the 16 September 2025 General Election.
