Malawi has launched its national state of environment and outlook report on Friday, 5th June 2026 in Lilongwe.

The report, which has been launched by the Minister of Natural Resources, Patricia Wisikesi, coincided with the commemoration of this years’ World Environmental Day which falls on 5th June.

According to Wisikesi, the report is a sign of government’s renewed commitment in restoring the environment in the country.

Wisikesi said it is sad to learn that the country is losing 250,000 hactres of forest every year.

She further said the report provides options and ideas to protect the environment, to enhance biodiversity conservation, and climate action.

In her remarks, Deputy Norwegian Ambassador to Malawi Rannveig Ragendra, whose government offered technical support for the production of the report, said it is essential to make sure that the recommendations are implemented accordingly because Malawi is losing seven percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) through environmental degradation.

The report is supposed to be produced every five years but the previous one was produced 16 years ago.
