Red Lions continued their impressive return to the top flight with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chitipa United at Zomba Stadium on Sunday, thanks to Head Coach Malumbo Mkandawire’s tactical substitutions and the explosive performance of Man of the Match, Shukuran Mussa.

Backed by an impressive turnout of supporters who filled the terraces of Zomba Stadium after the two-week FDH Bank Premiership recess, the Lions collected maximum points to further cement their growing reputation as one of the league’s surprise packages.

The encounter began at a frenetic pace, with both sides displaying attacking intent.

Red Lions gradually took control of proceedings, dominating possession and dictating the tempo, with Safton Chimtokoma at the centre of most of the hosts’ attacking moves.

By the half-hour mark, Chimtokoma, Mphatso Magaleta and Mussa were tormenting the Chitipa defence, but despite their dominance, the hosts could not find a breakthrough as the match turned into a cagey midfield battle before the interval.

Red Lions returned from the break with renewed purpose and came close at 52 minutes when a flowing move ended with Chimtokoma fluffing his lines from a promising position.

Sensing the need for fresh impetus, Mkandawire made decisive changes, introducing Kaliwo Harawa and Humphreys Minandi in place of Matamando Matchipitsa and Chimtokoma.

The substitutions immediately transformed the hosts’ attacking approach.

Three minutes later, drama unfolded when Minandi thought he had given the Lions the lead.

The substitute and Mussa were already celebrating in the corner after the ball appeared to have crossed the line, only for the referee to rule that it had not wholly crossed, much to the disbelief of the home supporters.

However, the pressure finally paid off in the 75th minute. After Chitipa had won a corner, Red Lions goalkeeper quickly released Mussa on a counterattack.

The speedy winger spearheaded a swift move, and after Minandi’s effort struck the crossbar, Mussa was brought down inside the box while attempting to pounce on the rebound.

Mphatso Magaleta stepped up and calmly converted the resulting penalty to break the deadlock and send the packed Zomba Stadium into wild celebrations.

Chitipa’s frustrations were compounded late in the match when their assistant coach was shown a red card in the 86th minute as tempers flared on the touchline.

Despite the narrow scoreline, Red Lions were worthy winners, with Mussa’s direct running, pace and relentless pressing proving too much for the visitors to handle.

His outstanding display deservedly earned him the Man of the Match accolade.

The victory extends Red Lions’ impressive home form and reinforces the growing belief that the newly promoted military side can compete comfortably among the Premiership’s established teams.

More importantly, it was another afternoon that underlined the importance of Zomba Stadium’s passionate supporters and Mkandawire’s tactical acumen, with his substitutions ultimately providing the spark that secured all three points.

For the jubilant Zomba faithful, it was yet another statement performance from a re-energised Red Lions side that is steadily turning its adopted home into one of the most intimidating venues in the league.
