Zomba City Council has expressed concern over the huge disparity in revenue generated from top-flight football matches and lower division fixtures hosted at Zomba Stadium.
The council’s Sports Officer, Evance Kashoti, says attendance figures at the NBS Bank National Division League matches remain significantly low compared to FDH Bank Premiership games, which is negatively affecting revenue collection.
The NBS Bank National Division League encounter between Changalume Barracks and Ndirande Stars which took place on Saturday 30th May 2026 attracted fewer than 180 spectators.
The turnout contrasted sharply with the recent FDH Bank Premiership clash between Mighty Wanderers and Silver Strikers at the same venue, which generated more than K50 million in gate revenue.
According to Kashoti, the low patronage of lower division football threatens the council’s efforts to complete the construction of dressing rooms and routine maintenance works at the stadium.
He has since appealed to football fans in Zomba and surrounding areas to embrace all levels of the game, saying increased attendance would contribute towards the development and sustainability of sports infrastructure in the city.
“The council remains hopeful that growing interest in lower division football will help boost revenue streams and support ongoing stadium improvement projects,” Kashoti said.
Zomba Stadium is home ground for Red Lions and Mighty Wanderers in the elite league and Changalume Barracks in the NBS National Division League.
